Why Mars Changes Brightness So Much

Unlike Jupiter or Saturn, Mars orbits just outside Earth's orbit. Every ~26 months, Earth catches up to Mars at opposition, bringing Mars within 60–100 million km and making it blaze bright orange-red in the sky. When Mars is on the far side of its orbit, it shrinks to a tiny disk (<6 arcseconds) that shows little surface detail in small scopes.

Telescope Tips for the Red Planet

Mars requires high magnification (140x to 220x) and steady atmospheric seeing. Look for the bright white polar cap and dark albedo regions such as Syrtis Major when Mars is above 40° altitude.
